The Underground Scribe: Not by Bread Alone

Yet by bread when bread is needed.

And not by bread alone, but by drink, and flowers, and pretty things.

Because the Holy Spirit has made our bodies His temple (1 Cor. 6:19), and the Greek word for "temple" in this verse is naos, meaning "highly decorated shrine."

I, and you, if you are in Christ, have highly decorated shrines inside us, our born-again spirits a permanent home grand enough to be a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit of God.

And until we see the unimaginable beauty of our own permanent home, we celebrate here, in our impermanent flesh, with the beauty of impermanent things. A joyful foretaste of the beauty to come.

So What's a Scribe?

A scribe is someone who consistently operates in three broad giftings: writing, teaching, and administration. Scribes often fill roles of recording and preserving; may be connected with the law, history, scholarship, or government; or serve as secretaries, treasurers, or board members of organizations. The scribe may, of course, carry other gifts as well.

It's possible to receive a scribal assignment yet not be a scribe, just as it’s possible to prophesy (per 1 Corinthians 14) but not be a prophet.

A prophetic scribe is a scribe who conveys the testimony of Jesus in their work (Rev. 19:10), for the purpose of expanding His Kingdom. A prophetic scribe also edifies, encourages, and consoles the church (1 Corinthians 14:3).
